Wasabi is a root vegetable, related to the horseradish we are familiar with, that is commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Like the horseradish, wasabi is also hot as a result of vapors it emits to irritate nasal passages. Fresh wasabi roots are fairly rare, even in Japan, so substitutes for it have been produced in the form of prepared pastes that come in tubes or wasabi powder to which water has to be added. The pastes are more convenient, as they are ready to be used straight out of the tube.
